How to make a QR code for a restaurant menu
How to put your menu behind a QR code you can update anytime. Change prices and specials whenever you like, without reprinting a single table sticker.
A menu QR code lets a guest open your menu on their own phone. There's no app to install and no paper card to pass around. Change a price, and you update the menu once instead of reprinting cards. Here's how to set one up so it keeps working for years.
Step 1: decide where the menu lives
Your QR code needs something to open. You have two sensible options:
- A page you already have. A menu on your website works, or a PDF you host somewhere. Fastest to start.
- A menu page built for phones — laid out for a small screen and easy to edit yourself. If you don't have one, this is the part worth getting right. A heavy PDF that guests have to pinch and zoom is what turns people off a menu QR.
Step 2: use a dynamic code, not a static one
This is the most important choice. A dynamic QR points to a short redirect you control. When your menu URL changes, you update the destination once and every printed table sticker keeps working. A static code bakes today's link in permanently, so a menu change forces a reprint. For a menu, always go dynamic. (We explain the difference in full in Static vs Dynamic QR codes.)
Step 3: generate, then test on a real phone
Generate the code and — before you print a hundred of them — scan the printed-size version with both an Android phone and an iPhone, using the built-in camera. Check that it opens quickly and lands on the right page. It takes two minutes and saves you a table full of stickers that don't scan.
Step 4: print it where hands and eyes are
- Table tents or table stickers — one per table, at the corner where people rest their phone.
- A stand at the counter for takeaway and waiting guests.
- Keep a quiet margin (empty space) around the code and print it at least 2–3 cm wide so a camera locks on from a comfortable distance.
Step 5: keep it current
The whole point of a dynamic menu code is that it moves with you. Ran out of a dish? Changed prices for the season? Update the menu it points to and the codes already on your tables show the new version instantly.
If you'd like us to build and host the menu page itself — laid out for phones and editable without reprinting — that's what our Pro plan is for. If you already have a menu link, a plain dynamic code is all you need.
